Jorge Linares (43-3, 27 knockouts) seeks his seventh consecutive lightweight title victory when he meets San Clemente's Gesta, who is trained by seven-time trainer of the year Freddie Roach, Linares' former cornerman.

As for Gesta’s new head coach and trainer Freddie Roach, the hall-of-fame mentor knows what his ward is capable of.

“It’s a tough fight but Mercito is a very good boxer, a good southpaw and we’re going to give him hell.”

Fight night won’t be the first time for Gesta and Linares to share the ring, nor will it be the first time for Roach to see the reigning champion work.

Gesta as trained with Linares before, while Roach has coached the Venezuelan in the past, and he believes that it won’t he won’t be the same fighter as he was five years ago.

The Pinoy challenge believes that the history between Roach and Linares could work to his favor.

This would be doubleheader HBO BOXING AFTER DARK: LUCAS MATTHYSSE VS. TEWA KIRAM AND JORGE LINARES VS. MERCITO GESTA, presented SATURDAY, JAN. 27 at 10:30 p.m. (live ET/tape-delayed PT) from The Forum in Inglewood, California.

Three-weight World Champion Jorge Linares defends his WBA World Lightweight Title on January 27th against Mercito Gesta, hoping to make it six successful defences in a row.

Mercito Gesta will be hoping to derail the 32-year-old’s run of form and become the first man to defeat Linares in five and a half years. Gesta has an impressive record of 31-1 with 17 KOs. His last loss came in 2012 to then-World Champion Miguel Vazquez.

Since that reverse, Gesta is on a six fight unbeaten streak that includes a brutal knockout win over former World Title challenger Martin Honorio. Linares must be weary of the Filipino’s power, and a win will take him one step close to a potential unification with Robert Easter Jr.
